Alex Murray

Happy AL :)

I am Alex, 25yr old potter that works/plays all around the Seattle area. I work as a studio tech/manager/teacher at Eastside Pottery in Redmond, WA. Which now has studios open on both the eastside as well as Seattle proper with more on the way. I have been practicing ceramics for about 10 years. Like many others, my first experience with clay was in high school and I caught the bug for it. I love the way it feels in my hands, and how malleable it can be, you can create anything you want with it. Also the feeling of putting in time/energy into something that people will love but also be able to use regularly. I want people to be able to pick up my work and feel the amount of love I put into each piece.

My Story

My first experience with clay was in high school. I loved the first class I took so much that I took ceramics every year until I graduated. From there I knew that I wanted to teach art and be able to work with clay as my career. I went to college attempting to get a degree in secondary education with an emphasis on art. I was able to take a few ceramics courses in college as well reaffirming that ceramics is my calling. I would procrastinate all other schoolwork to play in the studio for 8-10 hours a day.

When the pandemic hit I switched to online school to finish my degree. I was depressed for a few months but I invested in ceramics equipment of my own and built a small home studio in my parent’s garage. The next two years I spent practicing over and over to gain the skills necessary to teach and sell my own quality work.

In December 2021, I was hired at Eastside Pottery a 24hr independent workspace for ceramic artists. I was hired to load/unload kilns, clean, and teach at the original studio as well as the brand-new studio they had opened in Bellevue. Since then, 2 more have opened one in capitol hill and one in Greenlake.

I plan to continue growing in my passion for ceramics. Diving ever deeper into the extreme intricacies and hidden secrets that the ceramic process holds. I find myself constantly learning more and more every day and I would be lying if I said I did not love every second of it.
